Referral requirements

How to refer

Referrals can be addressed to any of our three clinical geneticists, and will be triaged generally to the next available clinician and genetic counsellor.  However if you would prefer your patient to be seen by a specific doctor, please note this in your referral.

All appointments will be via Telehealth, and all patients will meet with a genetic counsellor together with a clinical geneticist.  Medicare rebates for a portion of the appointment cost will be applicable to appointments where an appropriate referral is received.  Medicare rebates will be available for some genetic tests, where patients meet the eligibility criteria.  Self funded genetic testing may be facilitated in some cases.

Please make your referral via Healthlink. Contact reception with any queries.

We welcome referrals for conditions amenable to the Telehealth format, such as:

  • Please note all cancer related referrals require the following information to be included:

    • Copy of relevant histopathology report (if available)

    • Copy of relevant imaging report (CT, MRI)

    • Relevant family history

    • Indication as to whether genetic test results may impact treatment decisions.  Please include any relevant information such as proposed dates of surgery. We will prioritise such referrals and aim to expedite any test results.

  • Please note all referrals relating to copy number variants must include a copy of the proband’s microarray.  If parental testing has been recommended by the testing laboratory, we request that this is arranged prior to referral if at all possible, where appropriate.  One exception to this would be if there is an incidental finding leading to increased cancer risk, where careful genetic counselling is indicated prior to parental testing.

  • Please include information regarding the affected relative, in particular a copy of any genetic test results if available.

  • We provide the following:

    • Pre-pregnancy carrier screening

    • Assessment of risk for genetic condition in a pregnancy,

    • Non invasive prenatal screening

    • Abnormalities identified on pregnancy ultrasound.

    • Please alert our practice team to any urgent referrals regarding an ongoing pregnancy.
